Large-scale spatial patterns of riverine communities: niche versus geographical distance

چکیده
Abstract Freshwater ecosystems are among the most threatened on Earth. Effective conservation strategies essential to reverse this trend and should be based sound knowledge of biodiversity patterns main drivers structuring them. In study, we investigated role environmental dispersal-connectivity controls freshwater diatom fish communities’ variability. We used 441 biological samples obtained from Spanish biomonitoring datasets, which cover a highly variable gradient across national river network. compared taxonomic trait-based spatial dependency two biotic groups using distance-decay relationships variation partitioning with spatially constrained randomisations. Our findings showed that diatoms was attributed pure structured variation. Compared diatoms, community composition presented stronger dependency, likely because their weaker dispersal ability. addition, broad-scale characteristics higher predictive capacity for assemblages’ Trait-based similarities lower than indicating they less susceptible effects. These contribute understand mechanisms underlying assembly at large scales (i.e., beyond network) point out importance processes, usually neglected in traditional niche-based programmes but can influence outcomes (e.g., masking detection anthropogenic impacts). Therefore, integration component, as well information organisms’ abilities, crucial when establishing effective objectives designing strategies.

Large-scale temporal and spatial patterns
Phytoplankton constitute the main algal biomass in pelagic ecosystems and, therefore, play a fundamental role in the functioning of the marine trophic web. Information on long-term trends in marine phytoplankton may help to distinguish between biological responses to natural oscillations in climate and global warming, and to evaluate possible regional effects of eutrophication. The aim of this ...
متن کاملSpatial and Temporal Patterns in Large-Scale Traffic Speed Prediction
The ability to accurately predict traffic speed in a large and heterogeneous road network has many useful applications, such as route guidance and congestion avoidance. In principle, data driven methods such as Support Vector Regression (SVR) can predict traffic with high accuracy, because traffic tends to exhibit regular patterns over time. However, in practice, the prediction performance can ...
متن کاملLarge-scale particle image velocimetry for measurements in riverine environments
[1] Large-scale particle image velocimetry (LSPIV) is a nonintrusive approach to measure velocities at the free surface of a water body. The raw LSPIV results are instantaneous water surface velocity fields, spanning flow areas up to hundreds of square meters. Measurements conducted in typical conditions in conjunction with appropriate selections of parameters for image processing resulted in m...

Ecologic Niche Modeling and Spatial Patterns of Disease Transmission
Ecologic niche modeling (ENM) is a growing field with many potential applications to questions regarding the geography and ecology of disease transmission. Specifically, ENM has the potential to inform investigations concerned with the geography, or potential geography, of vectors, hosts, pathogens, or human cases, and it can achieve fine spatial resolution without the loss of information inher...
